Passing the baton

Just me today. Evie’s at work. The 10CR recedes in our minds. We sleep in the country we woke in. Days are measured on calendars rather than maps.

I’m with TS2 as I write this. I’ve cleaned her, checked her fluids, sat with her each morning. Not because I think she’ll suddenly falter. Not because I’ve needed to drive her anywhere. But because we learn to look after the things we love, and we learn to love the things we look after. Just simple things like knowing exactly where the bonnet catch is, or when to let it drop to get a solid shut now catch in my throat.

TS2 was entrusted to our care for five short weeks, and tomorrow she goes home. I do not think the Register are ready for our tears. It almost broke my heart watching Evie drive TS2 away from me in Rolduc. I do not know how we will go forward from here.

I hope she has many more adventures with the members of the Register. That we have done enough to promote her and foster affection for this plucky, loyal, brave little car. If it works, Evie and I will become just a tiny part of TS2’s story going forward. She will always be a huge chapter in ours.

Do not let her become irrelevant.
